Impact
For more than 100 years, the Virginia Zoo has been evolving to help guide, encourage, and inspire the next generation of wildlife allies. Here’s how we plan to make particularly powerful impact here at Hampton Roads and beyond.
Conservation
Engaging with threatened species up close is a powerful tool in encouraging people to live more sustainably and make better, more empathetic choices for the natural world. We play a pivotal role in providing the spaces, staff, and experiences that help these species thrive, all right in front of the eyes of folks that might not get to engage with these animals otherwise.
Education
As the only zoological park in Virginia to be accredited by the American Zoological Association (AZA) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, we have a responsibility to utilize wildlife, STEM, and conservation education to as wide of an audience as possible. The learning opportunities at the Zoo are endless, and with each one, we encourage more and more people to advocate for the protection of animals.
Green Action
From greenhouse renovation and utilization to employing green building practices in construction to specifically choosing to “upcycle” old spaces to give them fresh life, we believe it is of the upmost importance to promote green practices during this campaign.
